If you haven’t had the chance to watch Sony AFFIRM’s latest film Overcomer, you’re missing out on one of the most inspiring movie events of the year. Whether you’re a 5-year old kid or 90-year old grandparent, this movie has something special for you. It’s funny, relatable, exciting and uplifting. It’s a fantastic story of an ambitious high school basketball coach whose unexpected loss leads to one of the most life-changing events of his career.
After a draining bout with anger and bitterness, John Harrison finally finds joy in the most unlikely of places – a new coaching position on the high school XC team. There was just one problem…the team only had 1 member. As John reluctantly agrees to allow this troubled teen to represent the “team”, he quickly realizes that there is something special about this runner. There are so many different twists and turns along the way, but ultimately what follows is a life-changing discovery that forever changes the lives of both coach and runner.
Similar to other Kendrick Brother films, this movie really focuses on light in the midst of the darkness. It successfully portrays a relatable tragedy and how we can always choose what our response will be. What separates this movie from some of the others is the flow. The script-writing, camera work, acting and character development were much improved and came together quite well throughout the entire movie. There were some slower moments, but the impact of the moment matched the timeframe that was allotted to it. Unlike most inspirational films, there really wasn’t a time where I felt that the story was dragging.
If you are looking for a great movie that will inspire the entire family, look no further than Overcomer. You will not regret it. For me, it was one of the most uplifting films I’ve ever seen.
